Category: Hiking
Location: Maui
DESCRIPTION
An exclusive experience on the west side of Maui! Venture into an area closed to the public to learn what a healthy watershed is, and what it takes to protect it! We will take guests on a journey to discover a Native Hawaiian Rainforest and teach them why protecting these places is so important to our island communities cherished resources. Beautiful vistas, knowledge and an unforgettable place await.
TIMELINE
- 9:00am: Upon Arriving at the PKW base yard, guests will have the opportunity to experience our retail store where they will check in and be greeted by our naturalist guides who will take them through an explanation of what Pu'u Kukui Watershed Preserve staff do, and why their work is important to our island. In order to keep the preserve safe from invasive species everyone will then decontaminate their shoes and board the 2013 Ford E-350 Van to be taken to the trail head.
- 9:30am: After a quick 10-15-minute narrated drive we arrive at the trail head.
- 9:45am: The next hour and fifteen minutes will be spent walking the 1.5-mile moderate trail that winds through an Arboretum that was planted by D.T. Fleming nearly 100 years ago. There are multiple stops along the way to point out different plant species and view beautiful scenery. The hike is designed to further immerse guests into the conservation experience and help them better understand the challenges faced while protecting Maui's most cherished resource. Once at the end of the trail there is a lookout with stunning views of the surrounding valleys and mountain peaks. We will spend about 10-15min at the lookout learning about the valleys of Pi'ilani and enjoying a light snack
- 11:00am: The walk out is much quicker and will end back at the trailhead, where guests will enjoy a Maui Gold pineapple refresher.
- 11:30am: On the drive back down, we will stop at the Honolua Bay lookout to connect the mountain to the ocean. Guests will now understand why a healthy watershed is not only important for our water resource but also our ocean as well.
- 12:00pm: Tour will conclude at the base yard and we wish them a Hui Hou!
